How the Name Was Added
In February 2025, after returning to office for his second term, President Donald Trump replaced the Democratic-appointed members of the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees with political allies and top administration officials. The newly reconstituted board subsequently elected Trump as its chair.
In December 2025, the board voted unanimously to officially rename the venue “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” The implementation of the new name was swift; it appeared on the institution’s official website within hours of the vote, and physical signage was erected on the building’s exterior by the following morning. The name was also integrated into the center’s promotional materials, social media profiles, and internal documents.

The Impact: Reactions and Consequences
The decision to attach the 47th president’s name to the national arts center yielded mixed reactions and distinct consequences:
- Positive Perspectives: Proponents of the change, including the Trump administration and its appointed board members, argued that the rebranding demonstrated a “bipartisan commitment to the Arts.” Furthermore, during later legal disputes, government lawyers claimed that the name change positively impacted fundraising. They argued that some donors contributed money specifically because of Trump’s name and that removing it would legally obligate the center to return those funds.
- Negative Perspectives: The renaming drew immediate condemnation from arts advocates and members of the Kennedy family, who viewed the move as the defilement of a living memorial dedicated to the assassinated 35th president. Critics and litigators pointed out that the politicization of the historically non-partisan venue alienated audiences and performers, leading to reduced participation from the arts community.
The Legal Battle and Removal Process
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was established by Congress in 1964 as the sole national monument to John F. Kennedy in the capital. Because of this legal designation, the board’s authority to alter the name was quickly challenged in court.
- The Lawsuit: Representative Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center’s board, filed a lawsuit in December 2025. Beatty initiated the legal action after she was stripped of her voting power and muted during the virtual board meeting where she attempted to oppose the name change.
- The Ruling: In May 2026, U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the renaming was illegal. In a 94-page decision, Judge Cooper stated, “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.” He set a firm deadline of Friday, June 12, 2026, for all references to Trump to be removed from the center’s branding, website, and physical building.
- The Final Appeals: In the days leading up to the deadline, the center’s administration began scrubbing the name from its digital platforms, including its website and YouTube channel. However, less than 36 hours before the deadline, lawyers representing the Department of Justice and the Kennedy Center board filed emergency motions requesting a stay. They argued that temporarily removing the name while an appeal was processed would cause public confusion and financially harm the institution.
- The Physical Removal: On the evening of June 12, an appellate court panel rejected the administration’s request for an immediate stay. In the early hours of Saturday, June 13, 2026, workers erected scaffolding and tarps over the facade to physically dismantle the “The Donald J. Trump and” lettering. The removal took about 30 minutes and was completed as crowds gathered outside the center chanting “Take it down!” and “Shame!”, ultimately restoring the venue to its original congressional designation.
